The Complexity of Stuttering

Clearly, people with a stuttering disorder suffer physically, as the impediment prevents them from communicating. But is the problem actually mental, and not physical?

Speculations of stuttering led some to believe that it may be a form of anxiety. Instead of freezing or panicking, in the middle of an anxiety attack, the individual would lose their sense of speech. But after enough study, Professionals have come to conclude this impediment as a mixture of both physical and mental ailment.

According to Cleveland Clinic, stuttering is most likely a genetic issue, whereby either the symptom was hereditary or something in the patient's brain did not develop properly. Either way, the child's speech is disrupted, and can only be treated by Speech Therapy. If by any means the patient proved to be effected by depression or anxiety though, medication may be of help.

It is by no means that stuttering should be taken lightly, as it may be a permanent condition. Apart from social stigma, those suffering from this ailment, should be concerned with one's mental and physical health.

A scene in the Netflix series, Umbrella Academy, had the character, Diego, reveal his secret shame of being a stutterer. The show showcased his struggle experienced with his loving mother, in a flashback, revealing a tender moment before a harsh ultimatum to shut her body down, in present day. He worked through the struggle, and would then repeat his impediment at a moment of weakness, as his mother's eyes would go blank, exhibiting his stuttering as a permanent burden to carry.

Working through the techniques for such a disorder isn't as easy or quick as movies and TV shows would have us believe, and to take the matter lightly would be a mistake. So work hard and be sure to always keep an open ear for solutions, when needed.
